Things obviously get more complicated in reality but these code snippets are really readable and easy to follow

answer tool is an interesting approach to structured output which it looks like is still experimental https://sdk.vercel.ai/docs/ai-sdk-core/agents#structured-answers

seems to have really nice ergonomics compared to other sdk's

They probably want to avoid leaning in on openai specific features like structured output, and a tool is more generic

It's trivial to hot swap models with AI sdk

i mean they already have generate object and stream object

but i'm not sure if it can be used with tools

Those were built before structured outputs were a thing. They use zod at runtime to reject and retry calls until it fits the schema you want

I see, the link to experimental output structure just takes you to generateObject etc.

its a little more complicated than just zod, but yeah runtime json scanning / parsing is quite cool
