The question this paper addresses: LLMs are restricted to reason in the “language space,” where they typically express the reasoning process with a chain-of-thought (CoT) to solve a complex reasoning problem. Is language space always optimal for reasoning? The authors argue that it might not be. The paper authors explore LLM reasoning in a latent space by introducing Coconut (Chain of Continuous Thought). This involves a simple modification to the traditional CoT process that frees the reasoning from being within the language space.
